About

Matamata College is a co-educational state secondary school located in Matamata, New Zealand with a roll of approximately 800 students incorporating Years 9 to 13.

Our school aims to give every student the highest quality education experience. It serves and prides itself in offering quality opportunities in academic, social, sporting and cultural fields for its students. We provide learning programmes and opportunities for every student to reach their potential, and grow into responsible, positive, and contributing citizens who are confident, connected, and actively involved lifelong learners ready to take on the 21st century.

Our school whakatauki is “Ma mahi, ka ora” which means “by work we prosper”. Simply, this means that the more work that you put in and the more you get involved in everything that Matamata College offers, the more you will enjoy school and the more success you will have.

Matamata College has a proud and growing rugby tradition, with the game playing a central role in the school’s sporting culture. The 1st XV has enjoyed periods of strong success over the years, with many players progressing into senior club rugby and representative pathways across the Waikato and Thames Valley regions. Players have represented Thames Valley, King Country, NZ Heartland XV, Waikato, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Māori All Blacks, All Black Sevens, and All Blacks.

Matamata College is situated within the highly competitive Waikato rugby province, home to several well-established schools renowned for their rugby pedigree and depth. In this landscape, success is hard earned, particularly for a small country school drawing from a township of approximately 10,000 people. Despite this, Matamata College has long been known for punching above its weight, producing teams and players who compete with pride, resilience, and determination against much larger catchments. This underdog identity continues to shape the character of rugby at Matamata College and remains a source of strength for the programme.

In 2026, Matamata College will enter the Central North Island (CNI) 1st XV Rugby Competition for the first time, marking an exciting new chapter for the programme. The move from Waikato Division 1 into the CNI competition is driven by a desire to provide consistent, high-quality rugby that both attracts and retains players within the Matamata community, reducing the need for students to seek opportunities elsewhere. Competing in the CNI places Matamata College alongside some of the strongest school programmes in the region, offering our players regular exposure to elite standards and setting the foundation for long-term growth, development, and pride in representing their school.

Richard Waru Coach

Richard Waru is a experienced coach who has been coaching rugby at Matamata College since 2010, where he started U14 level and through the grades to 1st XV, He coached at 1st XV level for seven years and has been back the past two years, His coaching also has been in the local Matamata community where he has given his time for both local Clubs, Hinuera and Matamata through coaching at under 21, division 1 and Premier Rugby.

Richard says I have been brought up all my life with rugby, I started coaching when my sons got to college level, and I'm still there. I love to see the development these young men build to and the relationships/friendships, connections they achieve through their rugby years that they end up with for a lifetime.

I am very excited to see Comag Matamata College step up to the Central North Island 1stXV Rugby competition, which is what I feel as development in our college and our hard-working rugby community.

The CNI competition is a great, well-run competition which has developed many All Blacks over the past years. It will give our young men a chance to test themselves against some quality players and give them the learning to be the best person and rugby player they can be.
